CHAPTERS FROM HISTORY OF ECLETISM IN ARCHITECTURE GARANHUNS CITY
THE CATHEDRAL OF SANTO ANTONIO (1859)
Abstract
Eclectic architecture emerged in the city of Garanhuns/PE around the second half of the 19th century, as an indication of the strong petty-bourgeois influence in this urban area. In this article, we will explore the origins and characteristics of one of the main examples of eclectic architecture in Garanhuns: the Cathedral of Santo Antônio; highlighting its importance in its production context and the influence it exerts to this day. The historical material aspects of eclecticism, such as its historical-architectural characteristics, will be the object of analysis in this article. They will be discussed as the main characteristics of Garanhuns' urban development process and are present in the history of this eclectic architecture. Its extensive, plural implementation, marked by a mixture of elements from different styles, eras and countries, will be studied through a detailed, comparative and critical analysis; seeking to understand how this eclectic architecture became a striking and controversial style, challenging the conventions and uniformity of contemporary architecture and its time.
