Effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on fractures, pseudoarthrosis, and bone consolidation in adults

Abstract

Ultrasound therapy has been used in bone repair; however, there are still controversies regarding its effects and application parameters, and its use is often neglected or based solely on practical experience. Thus, a study that investigates the existing literature on the use of ultrasound in bone healing is of great importance to the academic community, as it can describe the relevant parameters and effects and provide evidence to support the use of this therapy in clinical practice. In addition, this approach may represent an evidence-based therapeutic alternative for the treatment of impaired bone healing. In this context, therapeutic ultrasound has been explored as a non-invasive option with the potential to accelerate bone healing, reduce recovery time, and improve functional outcomes. From this perspective, this study aimed to elucidate the therapeutic effects of ultrasound use on the bone healing process in adult patients with fractures or pseudoarthrosis. This is an integrative literature review on the use of therapeutic ultrasound in the treatment of fractures in adults, characterized as exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative approach. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound therapy was shown to be safe and effective, promoting endochondral bone and callus formation, as well as reducing healing time in cases of fractures or pseudoarthrosis. Therefore, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound represents a promising therapeutic approach with the potential to support the treatment of fractures, pseudoarthrosis, and impaired bone healing. However, further studies are needed to contribute to the standardization of the parameters for the use of this therapy.
