THE EVOLUTION OF AMBIANCE:
FROM SUBMISSION TO INTEGRATION INTO CULTURAL HERITAGE

The concept of ambiance, understood as the relationship between tangible and intangible aspects of a territory, plays a crucial role in heritage preservation and management. This article aims to discuss the role of ambiance and its practical application in cultural heritage preservation. As a primary reference for its characterization, it draws on international documents and, in Brazil, official documents such as the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage’s Policy on Material Cultural Heritage. The methodology contextualizes the concept of ambiance and its practical application in heritage preservation. The content is divided into three sections: the transformation of the concept of ambiance, its relationship with the Brazilian context, and a reflection on its significance in the field. As a synthesis, the study proposes a categorization of ambiance into three levels—submissive, dialogical, and protagonist—to reflect on its application in cultural heritage preservation policies.
