An analysis of the role of Jesus Christ as an advocate

Abstract

The understanding of the role of Jesus Christ as the advocate of His people remains limited among Christians, since the title of advocate or comforter is primarily attributed to the Holy Spirit rather than to Jesus Christ. Without leaning toward subordinationism, it must be made clear that Jesus is indeed the advocate and intercessor. However, before ascending to heaven, He asked the Father to send the Holy Spirit to take His place until the appointed time of His return. This conceptual gap calls for a more in-depth analysis in light of Scripture. Accordingly, this study aims to highlight the person of Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity, as the advocate of His people. This is a bibliographic and exploratory study of a qualitative nature. The duality between divine holiness and justice and human frailty in the face of sin becomes evident. Although God's nature is incompatible with sin, His mercy provides a means of reconciliation through Jesus Christ. Those who acknowledge their sinful condition and place their faith in Christ find forgiveness and assurance before divine judgment, while those who reject this truth bring upon themselves the consequences of their actions. Humanity has historically sought to flee from the presence of God, whether out of shame or rebellion, fearing the inevitable judgment of an all-seeing and all-knowing God. However, the solution to this reality lies not in fleeing, but in recognizing the need for redemption, which is available only in Christ. Thus, it is concluded that the continuous intercession of Jesus Christ ensures that those who trust in Him are free from condemnation.
