CHAPTERS FROM HISTORY OF ECLETISM IN ARCHITECTURE GARANHUNS CITY
THE EPISCOPAL PALACE (1884)
Abstract
Eclecticism in Brazilian architecture is a constructive trend indicative of the transition process between slave labor for paid and free labor; from the imperial regime to the republican one and from the rural aristocracy associating with the urban bourgeoisie. In this sense, observing the advent of eclecticism in a city like Garanhuns/PE is studying its economic, political and social movements. For the present study, the Episcopal Palace is the object; housing for the Catholic Bishops who passed through the city since it became a Diocese in 1918. Its construction dates back to 1884, and its objective was to house the engineer responsible for the works to expand the railway branch that linked the interior of the then province of Pernambuco with as port cities. As it was built in a period of transition between the slave regime and the abolition of slavery (Lei Áurea, 1888), it is possible that it was still built using slave labor. Hypothesis that opens a path in the paradigm that eclecticism in Brazilian architecture was produced indifferently to slavery.
