CLIMATIC STRATEGIES IN THE MODERN RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE OF THE SERTÃO OF PARAÍBA

This article investigates the design solutions adopted in modern residences in the city of Sousa, located in the Paraíba hinterland, with emphasis on architectural strategies aimed at adapting to the semi-arid climate. The research is based on a photographic and analytical survey carried out in five residences that have recurrent formal and constructive characteristics, such as the predominant use of the color white, hollow elements, simple shapes, among others. Such elements are identified considering the high temperatures, intense insolation and low humidity typical of the region. From the historical and urban contextualization of the city, the study discusses how the language of modern architecture was appropriated locally, incorporating solutions that favor the environmental and thermal comfort of these residences. By understanding the spatial, formal and constructive aspects of the buildings, it is proposed a reflection on the importance of these solutions as an expression of a modernity sensitive to the specificities of the sertanejo territory, contributing to the recognition and appreciation of a collection still little explored by architectural criticism.
