Abstract

The present study presents a contribution to the teaching of the Portuguese language, having as research object the fake news phenomenon. The power of social networks and the internet to spread false information is evident. In order to understand the relevance of Fake News, it is necessary to clarify its connection with post-truth, the relativization of the truth that brings out implausible information based on beliefs and emotions, to the detriment of facts, with the intention of influencing the public opinion. In this context, a more detailed approach to Fake News today is essential. Due to this reality, we managed to develop the critical reading of students in the seventh grade of Elementary School and, to cooperate with this intention, we performed the analysis of activities related to Fake News in a textbook of the grade in question. Based on a proposal for pedagogical workshops on reading Fake News, we aim to work with students about the importance of evaluating what is read, reflecting and not inadvertently sharing information without checking its origin and veracity first. The analyzed textbook does not satisfactorily fulfill the task of providing students with the express recognition of fake news. The performance of this research revealed that it is possible to help students develop their reading skills and linguistic/semiotic analysis.
