Abstract

The photographic essay aims to document and critically reflect on the spatial aspects of the contemporary city under neoliberal logic, using images taken in São Paulo as representations of dynamics common to large metropolises. The visual narrative follows an ordinary day of an anonymous individual, beginning with wide urban scenes and gradually focusing on fragmented daily moments marked by impersonal movement and spaces of control, consumption, and surveillance. The city is portrayed as both a reflection and consolidation of neoliberal transformations, where public space becomes functional, accelerated, and segregated, directly affecting human relationships and mental health. The essay highlights how the urban environment shapes subjectivities marked by loneliness, competition, and disconnection, while also pointing to openings for resistance, collectivity, and belonging.
