THE INTERCULTURAL TEACHING OF STEREOTYPES IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES: A CRITICAL AND DIALOGICAL REFLECTION FOR A RESPONSIVE POSITION IN THE CLASSROOM.

This article was produced with the intention of presenting Bakhtinian concepts to the foreign language teacher so that, based on intercultural activities that have stereotypes as their theme, they can lead to a critical and dialogical reflection, which stimulates the student to adopt a responsive position. This is a qualitative research that proposes to analyze an activity called “les stéréotypes”, produced and made available by the public website of the government of Québec “TV5 Monde”, in the light of the dialogic theory of the Russian theorist and philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin. According to Hinton, research on stereotypes is understood from different perspectives, underlining the inevitable nature of human cognitive processes that develop different types of stereotypes, which prove to be useful or inconvenient depending on the everyday situations in which they are raised. We seek, therefore, to use the Bakhtinian concepts of dialogism, plurilingualism and responsive attitude to analyze and clarify the possibilities of treating the subject of stereotypes in the foreign language classroom.
