THE TIRADENTES SQUARE IN OURO PRETO:
MONUMENTALIZATION, TERRITORIAL HERITAGE, AND URBAN LANDSCAPE FROM A CRITICAL PERSPECTIVE

This article analyzes Tiradentes Square, in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, through the concepts of monumentalization, territorial heritage, and urban landscape, seeking to understand how historical processes of patrimonialization and social appropriation contributed to its constitution as a central symbolic space in the city. The study is based on the assumption that the square cannot be reduced to a preserved monumental ensemble, but must be interpreted as a lived territory continuously produced through the relationship between memory, power, social uses, and heritage value. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative, theoretical-interpretative approach based on bibliographic review, analysis of historical and documentary sources, and examination of visual and landscape representations of the square in different periods. It is concluded that the notion of territorial heritage makes it possible to interpret Tiradentes Square beyond its material preservation, revealing it as a relational, historical, and culturally contested space. The study contributes to a critical reading of patrimonialized public spaces by articulating monumentalization, memory, and urban experience.
