THE SPLIT-LEVEL SOLUTION IN CAMILLO PORTO’S MODERN HOUSES IN BELÉM OF PARÁ

This article investigates parallels between post-war American split-level houses and the modern residential productions of the Pará architect Camillo Porto de Oliveira, between the 1950s and 1960s, in Belém do Pará. Through a combined strategy of historical-interpretive research and qualitative research, we investigated how constant trips between the United States and Brazil contributed to the modern residential productions of this professional. The study of the original plans and the literature review elucidated a scenario of experimentation and the synonym of architectural innovation of his work, especially for an emerging class. Today, the gradual destruction of this architecture is a reminder of how little attention this heritage still receives as an object of study. These houses reflect how modernism has spread in the country's architectural culture and, although their importance is evident, the erasures are accelerating despite the more extensive investigations into Belém's modern heritage.
