RAÍZES
UMA JORNADA POR UBERABA
Abstract
Aristotle already said that “it is in cities that man can realize the virtue inscribed in his essence, as he is a political animal”. In addition to its artistic, cultural and social importance, the urban environment is the most faithful portrait of the history of its people. The dynamics of space narrates rises and ruins, progress and anachronisms, complexity and simplicity. Each part of the city is the result of the action of several characters who interact to overcome the environment, produce culture and guarantee the survival of the species.
From Brazil in 1500 to the developing country of the 21st century, the village, the town, the city, represent the concrete landmark of how our history unfolded. The streets and buildings embody a kind of temporal pattern that connects the past moment, the past; to the next minute, the future: what was and what is to come. Therein lies identity, the foundation of the construction of our autonomy.
Geographer Yi-Fu Tuan says that “enthusiasm for preservation arises from the need to have tangible objects on which to support a sense of identity”. Furthermore, the old buildings add beauty to the landscape and help maintain diversity. Shops, offices, clinics, clinics, public offices, in short, various segments occupy old properties of considerable historical value. The dynamics of the city often require that space be rethought. Conservation and preservation actions show that the past and the future can live in harmony.
Preserving our memories, our material and immaterial assets, is a resource for building our own identity. In an increasingly standardized world, resulting from globalization, the peculiarity of places becomes the greatest wealth that a community can possess. It is from this discussion that the concept of the “Raízes” exhibition was born, the importance of preserving and telling stories through architecture and historical heritage in the city of Uberaba.
