Abstract

Understanding the Zeitgeist conceptions and the organization of societies and the parameters established by Hegel between East and West are fundamental to understanding the orientalist and imperialist mentality of the 19th century. The work presented here is the result of an approach to my master's thesis, where it was not possible to explore further on the subject, and its main proposal is to analyze the influence of this predominant Hegelianism in nineteenth-century intellectuals and its reverberations with regard to the East, through of Emperor Pedro II and the Count of Gobineau. Through analysis and bibliographical reflections of the authors, we propose a debate about the historical and social context in which they were involved, also relating to authors who previously worked with the theme, and thus, the analysis of the sources themselves, that is, the reports of the emperor's journey to the Middle East in 1871 and 1876 and Gobineau's works on the Orient and Islam (1853-1869). Through debates on their historical, social and religious contexts, we will discuss the Hegelian concept of History and the Orient and its reverberations in the works of Pedro II and Gobineau, as well as criticize these reductionist notions of the Orient and historical teleology
