Abstract

Fortaleza is a city of intense contrasts, where the past and present coexist in a unique way. The architecture of Fortaleza manages to be remarkable in any era, but what truly marks the people of Alencarina society are the historical buildings and memories of a time that no longer exists. These constructions, marked by time and the stories they hold, represent much more than just stones and bricks. The built heritage of Fortaleza is one of the pillars of the city's cultural identity, a part of the emotional memory and the personal and collective experiences of its people. The project “Fortaleza: Between Memory and Oblivion” seeks to capture this cultural heritage through photography, which is often neglected but still resists the changes in time and use, becoming witnesses to our history. The goal of this series is not only to document the built heritage but also to provoke a reflection on the role of memory and preservation in contemporary society. Each image seeks to bring to light the duality between permanence and oblivion, revealing both the grandeur and the fragility of these witnesses of the past. The project aims, therefore, to create a bridge between what once was and what still can be. Through photography, this series aims to immortalize these historic mansions, which, even though worn down, remain standing and invite the appreciation of culture, history, preservation, and conservation of the existing heritage, which is, after all, part of society's cultural legacy. Ensuring the preservation of this part of history is essential to provide future generations with integrated access to the city's history, always in constant dialogue between today and tomorrow.
