EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES TO ENCOURAGE BREASTFEEDING: AN EXPERIENCE REPORT

Breastfeeding is essential for child health and development, strengthening the bond between mother and child. This study reports on the experience of nursing students at the Federal University of Campina Grande during an educational activity promoting breastfeeding in honor of Golden August. This descriptive, qualitative experience report was conducted at a Family Health Unit in the municipality of Cajazeiras, Paraíba, with the participation of pregnant women, postpartum women, and their families. The activity involved an educational lecture using accessible language, visual aids, and practical demonstrations, addressing benefits, breastfeeding techniques, complication prevention, and guidance on expressing and storing milk. Active audience participation was observed, marked by questions, experience sharing, and clarification of myths related to the practice, which fostered greater understanding of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding. It is concluded that educational actions in health, when based on dialogue and the bond between professionals and the community, represent an effective strategy for promoting breastfeeding and valuing the role of nurses in primary care.
