IMPACT OF CHRONIC ULCERS ON THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF ELDERLY PEOPLE

The increasing incidence of diabetes mellitus has led to severe complications such as diabetic foot, which significantly impacts quality of life and increases morbidity and mortality risks, particularly among the elderly. This case report describes the home care follow-up of an elderly patient with a chronic ulcer in the lower limbs, conducted by a nursing team in a Primary Health Care Unit (UBS). The study employed a qualitative and descriptive methodology, analyzing the patient’s clinical condition and the nursing interventions aimed at wound management and self-care promotion. The results revealed a slow healing process influenced by factors such as peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease, and socioeconomic vulnerability, which hindered treatment adherence. This study highlights the importance of home-based nursing care, the need for social support, and the strengthening of public policies to improve the management of chronic ulcers in elderly diabetic patients.
